Petersfield Town co-managers Connor Hoare and Callum Glen remained upbeat after the Rams exited the Southern Combination Football League Cup against Hassocks.
Morgan Vale’s 25th-minute goal sent the visitors through to the semi-finals.
The Rams had made eight changes to the side which won 5-1 at Crawley Down Gatwick and struggled early on before producing a strong second-half showing, and Hoare was pleased with how his side grew into the game.
“We made eight changes to what has been a consistent starting 11 so the first half was always going to be a bit disjointed,” said Hoare.
“We changed a few things in the second half and brought on players that are consistently playing together in a system they're used to.
“We had a number of good chances in the second half and it was fairly even in the end.”
Glen was also happy with his side’s second-half showing, but was disappointed they were unable to find an equaliser.
“We had a lot of opportunities to pick someone out in the box but I thought Hassocks defended their box quite well,” said Glen.
“We managed to get in a few times but didn't have that killer instinct to get the goal.
“We just fell short but I’m not too disappointed with the performance.
“The lads got good minutes in their legs on a tough surface.”
Rudi Blankson started for the Rams after joining on a dual-registration basis from Isthmian League South Central Division outfit Horndean, and Hoare was pleased with how the new recruit acquitted himself.
“We had Rudi for a game last year and were really impressed with him,” said Hoare.
“He can play in a number of positions.
“He's come in from the league above and we're delighted to have him.
“He is still getting used to how we play but he did everything he could.”
