Petersfield Town reached the next round of the Portsmouth Senior Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory at home to United Services Portsmouth.
The two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the second-round tie at Love Lane, before the Rams won 5-3 on penalties.
The Rams created the first chance of the evening in the seventh minute when Asad Ssemwogerere latched onto a ball over the top and forced a good block by United Services keeper Logan O’Donnell.
The home side went close again two minutes later when Kieran Alcock’s perfectly-weighted through ball picked out Harrison Cable, who forced a good save from O’Donnell.
Petersfield continued to probe and nearly took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Dec Seiden’s shot beat O’Donnell but hit the post.
The Rams started the second half on the front foot and went close on 49 minutes when Ssemwogerere drove down the left wing and cut the ball back to Cable on the edge of the box, but Cable’s shot went over the bar.
Petersfield created another good chance in the 63rd minute when Tom Dinsmore’s corner picked out Cable, who headed over the bar.
Cable turned provider four minutes later when he went on a driving run down the right wing and delivered a teasing cross across goal, but the stretching Henry McDonald couldn’t quite get his effort on target at the back post.
Neither side were able to find a breakthrough, and the tie went to penalties.
Seiden scored Petersfield’s first penalty before Ken Bosaka scored for United Services.
Callum Kimber scored Petersfield’s second penalty before Tyler Burns’ penalty was superbly saved by Rams keeper Kieran Connell.
McDonald put the Rams 3-1 up in the shoot-out before Taylor Crook made it 3-2.
Ssemwogerere scored Petersfield’s fourth penalty before Nath Clements made it 4-3.
Will Essai scored the Rams’ fifth penalty to send the home side through to the next round.
Next up for Petersfield is a home game against Haywards Heath Town in the Southern Combination Football League Premier Division on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
