Two Petersfield Golf Club players have qualified for the national finals of England Golf’s Race to Woodhall Spa competition.

Craig Beer and Sarah Gibson played at Bramshaw Golf Club in the New Forest on Sunday, June 9, and came third and fourth in one of the ten nationwide qualifying rounds – which involved up to 60 men and 60 women in each round.

The top six of each group qualified for the finals, which will be held at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire. The men’s final will be played on Tuesday, August 13, and the women’s final will be played on Wednesday, August 14.

Beer scored 35 stableford points and was three short of the winner’s tally. Gibson scored 38 points and clinched fourth place on countback. Blackmoor Golf Club’s Anne Morris came fifth with 37 points.

Gibson, who was accompanied by friend and caddy Mavis Eldridge, said: “Although I was quite nervous at the start when they announced my name on the tee, I settled down and played some of my best golf. It was a privilege wearing the Petersfield Golf Club colours, and getting to the final is the icing on the cake.”

Beer said: “I’ve joined the men’s and mixed matches this year to allow me to represent our club when I can, but being able to have a chance to represent the club in an event like this is something else. Here’s hoping Sarah and I can keep up the good form for the grand final in August.”
