Petersfield Golf Club (PGC) members have enjoyed the start of the autumn season, with 100 members taking part in the PGC Challenge at the club’s Tankerdale Lane base.

The PGC challenge, which returned this year after a break of 11 years, was played as a Ryder Cup-style series of four-ball better ball matches.

All matches were played on a holes up basis, so, even if a pair were five up with four to play, a match had to be played out to the 18th hole, giving a trailing pair a chance to turn the tables.

Team Blue, led by club manager and Surrey player Katie Laud, took a slender lead into the second day’s play.

Team White, led by Alex Burrows, did their best to wear down the Blues, but after 50 closely-fought singles’ matches it was announced that Team Blue had held on to their lead and secured the 2024 trophy – which was later presented by club captain Simon Baigent.

Laud, who has a handicap of 0.7 and won all of her three matches in the Counties’ National Finals in Devon last month, said: “Many thanks to Carlsberg for sponsoring the event by providing team polo shirts, to all the organisers who made the event so successful and to food and beverage manager Russell Orme and his team for the superb barbecue.

“We look forward to the PGC Challenge again in 2025, which of course is the year of the next Ryder Cup – which will add even more excitement to our event.”
