Haslemere Border athletes have taken part in a number of events.
First up was the Hendy Eastleigh 10km. Starting at Places Leisure in Eastleigh, the course is entirely on road and enters the Fleming Cycle Park for the last 700m to the finish line. The route is flat, with the emphasis on speed. For three Haslemere Border athletes that was indeed achieved. First home was Jon Fairs, finishing in 35.01. Daniel Allaway finished in a personal best 35.56 and Libby Soper finished in a personal best 44.55.
Elsewhere, Haslemere Border Athletics Club (HBAC) runners were at the Fleet half marathon, which is always a popular choice and an enjoyable course with lots of supporters. One athlete who relishes the race is Steve King, who even when feeling under the weather was not to be deterred from being at the start line. Steve finished in an impressive time of 1:55.47. First home for HBAC was Steve Taylor, who ran a superb race in 1:33.40 despite a niggling achilles. Steve was followed by David Mais in 1:50.10. Sammy French, who has been putting in some excellent training, was the only lady in the quartet and she produced yet another personal best and completed her race in 1:56.05. Well done to all four runners for a superb effort.
Haslemere coach Sarah Barnett, whose passion is not hills, defied the odds by taking part in the Heritage Trail Series 10km. The race is set in the lovely grounds of Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens and takes runners through some delightful trails. Sarah put her best feet forward and ploughed up the hills to finish her quest in an impressive time of 1:16.43. She received a medal for her efforts. Well done Sarah.
