Haslemere Hockey Club’s men’s second team picked up an impressive 2-1 win at Wimborne Wayfarers in South Central Men’s Division Two South on Saturday.
Despite snow blanketing much of the region and doubts about whether the game would even go ahead, the team embarked on a long drive south, leaving the frosty scenes of Haslemere behind for the bright sunshine of Wimborne.
With a strong squad of 15 players returning after a long Christmas break, the team arrived determined to make their efforts count.
Though the game began frantically, with basic errors from both sides as they shook off the holiday rust, Haslemere quickly settled into their rhythm.
Wimborne threatened early on, with their key players testing the Haslemere defence through a series of drag flicks from short corners.
However, Haslemere stood resolute, with goalkeeper Dom making several crucial saves to deny the home side.
Despite this, Wimborne broke the deadlock with a swift counter-attack, going 1-0 up.
Undeterred, Haslemere remained composed.
It was Ben who delivered the moment of the match – a superb goal from the baseline that left spectators and team-mates alike in awe.
Spurred on by Ben’s excellent goal, Haslemere continued to press and were soon rewarded.
A well-worked team move saw Max Amesbury, who was outstanding throughout the game, set up a reverse stick effort that ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net.
Haslemere now led 2-1 and showed superb patience, discipline and composure to keep control of the game.
The visitors maintained their discipline throughout, earning no cards.
As the clock ticked down, Wimborne pushed hard for an equaliser, but once again, Dom rose to the occasion with a superb save in the closing minutes to protect the lead.
Haslemere held firm, ensuring a 2-1 victory in a thoroughly entertaining contest.
