Aldershot Town continued their push for a place in the Vanarama National League playoffs with a 2-0 victory at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

Oldham arrived having not lost an away game in the league since October, but the Shots were dominant and won with goals from James Daly and Tyler Frost.

The hosts started the game brightly, having an early chance when Ryan Glover ran down the wing, putting a ball in for Daly, who could only put it wide of the post.

Their next chance came from a free kick, which was headed across the face of goal towards Stuart O’Keefe, who could not get it under control before Oldham cleared.

In the lead-up to their opener, Aldershot had another spell of chances but saw them cleared or collected by Oldham keeper Mat Hudson.

They eventually got their goal though, with Glover crossing it for Daly who nodded home from a central position.

Oldham had a chance to equalise just before referee Aaron Bannister’s whistle for half-time. Andrew Dallas drove into the box and squared the ball to meet the run of Oli Hammond, but he was unable to convert at the far post.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Shots had a prime opportunity to double their lead when Lorent Tolaj was slipped through by Glover.

The striker was through on goal, went past Hudson and had an empty net to shoot into, albeit at a somewhat tight angle, but because of the shot’s lack of power Harrison McGahey was able to block it on the line while on the ground, and he also deflected Josh Stokes’ follow-up over the bar.

If that was a good chance for Aldershot then their next was great, after Hudson was judged to have brought down Tolaj in the area.

It was Tolaj who stepped up to the spot, aiming for the bottom corner with power, but after a slight touch by Hudson it ricocheted off the post, to Oldham’s relief.

Aldershot sat deep and Oldham had spells of possession in the final third as they tried to break down Tommy Widdrington’s side, but resilient defending from the Shots’ keeper and defence alike thwarted any opportunity of a revival.

The Shots added their second goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time, with Frost capitalising on the fact that Oldham were throwing men forward, which allowed him to run through and fire a decent shot from just inside the box into the bottom corner.
