A solid display saw Petersfield Hockey Club’s women’s first XI overturn an early deficit to secure an impressive 5-2 victory over Chichester’s 2nd XI.
Chichester started strongly and scored an early goal by catching Petersfield off guard. But Petersfield responded swiftly, with Thompson breaking through on the counter to make it 1-1.
Chichester continued their aggressive play and soon found the net again with a strike from the top of the D, but just before half-time Thompson struck once more to make it 2-2.
The second half saw Petersfield take control, and G Stratton-Brown put her team ahead with a fantastic finish. Chichester tried to mount a comeback, but Petersfield’s defence held firm and Stratton-Brown’s clinical finishing took the game beyond Chichester’s reach as she scored two more goals to complete her hat-trick and seal a 5-2 win.
Petersfield’s women’s 2nd XI faced Basingstoke’s 5th XI on a sunny home pitch. Newly recruited goalie Millington kicked away several flurries on goal in the first quarter, aided by a solid defensive line of Preston, Day, Llewelyn and Callaghan.
Basingstoke managed to find the back of the net to take the lead, but Petersfield drew level after Simmonds scored off a short corner with a superb high flick over the Basingstoke keeper’s head.
A second goal for Petersfield came off a run by Preston, who crossed the ball for Stratton-Brown to chip into goal.
Despite Petersfield keeping up the pressure and momentum, Basingstoke scored two more goals to clinch a 3-2 win.
