Ice skating star Roberta Wheeler is proof no-one should ever give up on their sporting dreams.
The 60-year-old from Headley Down has won two trophies in one of the most prestigious figure-skating events in the world.
In these days of young superstars, she took up figure skating seriously relatively late – when she was 42 to enjoy a sport together with her daughter. And has never looked back.
Roberta said: “I’ve shown you are never too old to follow a dream.
“The international competition in Oberstdorf in Germany draws adult figure skaters age 29 and above from all corners of the world who compete over five days in varying ice skating disciplines.
“Winning two trophies against international competition – the ladies’ free skating age 59-plus and ladies’ artistic skating age 59-plus – was amazing and really was a dream come true.”
Roberta trains three days a week at 6am at Guildford Spectrum Ice with coaches Ruth Woodstock and Karen Hemmings, and two mornings a week at Gosport with coach Paul Crocker.
“It’s a fabulous sport and anyone can have a go – in fact, there is a really strong adult contingent down at Spectrum Ice,” she says.
“Competing in the UK and abroad is really challenging but great fun, and figure skating is not like any other sport – it’s you on the ice on 3mm of steel, jumping, spinning and performing a routine.”
