Toby Lee - the youngest performer in the UK Blues Hall of Fame - is supporting Jools Holland And His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra at G Live in Guildford on November 14 at 7.30pm.
He has been a special guest on Jools’ tours throughout the year, performing summer dates with fellow guest Imelda May and the autumn tour with Marc Almond.
Toby has also been playing shows with his own band, including Glastonbury, Black Deer and the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Added to festivals in Croatia, Norway and France, he will play more than 100 gigs in 2024.
He has shared the stage with a host of guitar stars including Buddy Guy, Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton and Slash, and has appeared alongside his hero Joe Bonamassa at the Royal Albert Hall and on Joe’s famed Mediterranean Blues Cruise.
Toby has been a Gibson Artist since the age of ten and is endorsed by Blackstar Amplification and D’Addario Strings.
Still just 19, Toby is already a three-time winner of Young Blues Artist of the Year at the UK Blues Awards - yet the virtuoso guitarist is only getting started.
Praised as a remarkable talent by the likes of Jools Holland and Joe Bonamassa, 2024 is representing a big breakthrough year for Toby, as he has released his new album House On Fire via 100% Records.
House On Fire is Toby’s first set of all-original material, and follows his 2021 debut Aquarius which spent two weeks at number one on the UK Jazz & Blues Album Chart.
As you would expect from someone that The Times hailed as “one of the best guitarists in Britain”, his six-string talents dazzle throughout, with a rich tapestry of scorching leads, evocative melodies and swaggering grooves.
Yet his vocals have come on in leaps and bounds, with his maturity and emotional expression providing a voice strong enough to front a band regardless of his guitar skills.
His songs and stylistic scope have expanded too, with a set that moves seemingly effortlessly between classic blues jams, punchy hard rock, intimate acoustic moments and a modernist approach to classic soul and Stax-style R&B. It is all played with a winning combination of youthful abandon and undeniable accomplishment.
Toby’s talents have been recognised by an array of big names. When he was ten, a get well soon video he made for BB King went viral, leading to an invitation from the blues legend’s family to play at his club in Memphis.
Toby said: “I’m so excited to be releasing my first original album and I’m super proud of the end result. It’s taken a while to be comfortable with songwriting but everything clicked on this album and the songs just flowed one after the other. I wanted an album that was positive and relevant to my age - blues rock with a hint of soul - and I think we achieved that.
“House On Fire is the title track and is very special to me - I guess it’s a coming-of-age song really, finding yourself and finding someone that changes your life.
“We love playing it as a band but it’s also one of the songs I play on tour with Jools Holland. Hearing the song backed by his incredible Rhythm & Blues Orchestra takes the song to another level.”
