The year 2024 has come up roses for Rosalinda Kightley as the Guildford painter was named Surrey Artist of the Year for her flower-themed offering.
Farnham lived up to its reputation as a hotbed of artistic talent by providing three – Colette Moscati, Philip Ryland the late Richard Jack – of the 17 finalists with Alison Hunt from Frensham also making the cut.
This year’s competition was a tight affair with 586 votes being submitted and just a few separating the shortlisted trio of Collette, Rosalinda and Dorking artist, Claire Kent, in the final three.
A judging panel which included Pippa Hufton from Farnham World Craft Town, mayor Cllr Brodie Mauluka, Jane McGovan, editor of Sheengate Magazine, and Cara Flowers from DAiSy, had the final say with Rosalinda getting the title, a £2,000 bursary and solo exhibition in the town centre gallery.
“It’s a bit like Strictly as there’s a final vote and the judges make the final decision,” said Outi Remes, New Ashgate director.
“At one stage there was just eight votes between the three. When Lucy Nichols won last year she was top from week one but it was all change this year and we couldn’t call it – it’s been incredibly tight and very exciting.”
The final trio were presented with bouquets before Cllr Mauluka confirmed Rosalinda’s triumph.
The winner said: “It’s very unexpected, overwhelming and made me incredibly happy.
“I’m looking forward to seeing what comes next. I just want to get back to the studio and get painting some more.”
There’s still a chance to see all 17 entries as the exhibition runs at the New Ashgate until this Saturday, November 9.
