A wave of relief has washed over Farnham as the town’s beloved carnival has been given the green light to return this summer.

Farnham Hedgehogs can’t wait to get the party started after getting the nod to hold this year’s event on Saturday, June 28.

There were concerns that ongoing “improvement” works in the town centre would be a barrier to one of the biggest events in the Farnham calendar from taking place.

But although some “logistical challenges” remain, they won’t stop the party with preparations now well underway with the colourful parade and festive atmosphere set to make a splash.

This year’s carnival will have an “Under The Sea” theme with talks ongoing about its exact route through town.

There will also be a vibrant carnival fayre on Gostrey Meadow with live entertainment, food and drink stalls and activities for all ages.

There is one significant change in the carnival’s organisation with the Farnham Hedgehogs taking sole responsibility for running this year’s event.

Previous events were co-organised with the Farnham Lions with the Hedgehogs calling on the community’s support to ensure the event’s continued success.

“We are determined to keep this longstanding Farnham tradition alive and thriving,” said Rob Eyre, the Farnham Hedgehogs chair of the event.

“The carnival has always been about community spirit and this year we need that spirit more than ever.”

The Hedgehogs have appealed to residents and businesses for a helping hand both before and during the event.

Volunteer helpers will be needed for both advance preparation and on-the-day assistance, while financial sponsorship is needed to help cover essential costs.

Contributing businesses have also been promised recognition in the carnival program and promotional materials, while donations of equipment, services and expertise will also be gratefully received.

And needless to say the more floats, the better, so would-be parade participants should get planning.

“The ongoing town centre works present some logistical challenges,” admitted Mr Eyre.

“But we’re working closely with the council to ensure a safe and enjoyable route for the parade.

“What we need now is the community to rally behind this event that has brought joy to generations of Farnham residents.”

We don’t need to remind Farnham residents of its place in the town, as it’s been a colourful and much-loved fixture for decades and a spectacle that draws thousands of visitors to our streets.

“In these times of change, maintaining our cultural traditions become even more important,” said the chairman of carnival fayre, Peter Greenyer.

“The carnival connects us to our shared history while creating new memories for the youngest generation,” added former chair of Farnham Maltings.

The carnival parade will begin at 6pm at Upper Hart Car Park while the fayre will take place from 2pm to 9pm on Gostrey Meadow.
