ALWAYS the highlight of their year, Binsted and District Growmore Club pulled out all the stops on Sunday to make their annual ploughing match, produce and domestic show its usual success.
Held at Ford Farm, Upton Grey, visitors had plenty to see and enjoy as the warm sun helped dry out the ground after Saturday’s torrential rain for the ploughing match, with tractors competing to create perfect furrows in record time.
The produce show had a range of crops grown on farms such as oats, barley, wheat and arable vegetables used to feed the animals.
The domestic show included demonstrations of cooking, sewing, crafts and a chance to try a new introduction, very popular flavoured spirits.
There were light lunches, coffee and tea and home made cakes and at the end of the day £900 was made to help with club expenses.
This year the club celebrated its 75th anniversary having been founded in January 1943.
Secretary Reita Fisher said: “Growmore Clubs are only found in Hampshire and were set up to give farmers, working hard during wartime, a social respite.
“We still have a very flourishing social side with a barn dance and beef roast in the summer, and an annual dance.
“We also have skittles and country ploughing, and we enter a county wide quiz challenge.
“We have a lot of fun events and anyone can join us – you don’t have to be connected with farming,” she said.
