We will remember them: those were the words repeated by tens of thousands of people as communities from Crondall to Churt gathered on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
Wreaths were laid on memorials around East Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex as we remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
One of the first services took place in Holybourne on Saturday with Cpt John Fitzpatrick RN – who also read the exhortation – and Lt Col David Redwood AAC speaking about the scale of Operation Overlord and the personal importance of the Army in their respective speeches.
The village’s new vicar, Revd David Chattell, lead prayers before Tony Wilman sounded The Last Post as banners dropped.
The pipes and drums of the Rose and Thistle band led the parade from Andrews Endowed School to the memorial with Damian Hinds MP and Alton mayor Cllr Annette Eyre among the civic figures who laid wreaths.
There were similar scenes up the A31 in Farnham on Sunday morning with a traditional service beginning a three-part Festival of Remembrance at St Thomas.
More than 100 young members of various Scout and Guide associations paraded alongside figures from the RBL and other uniformed organisations ahead of a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial on Frensham Road, the sounding of The Last Post, two minutes silence and Reveille.
A Requiem for Peace followed on Sunday evening while a concert performance of the Faure Requiem and other music for remembrance will complete the programme this Saturday.
Big turnouts were reported in Sheet, Four Marks and Liss while the 1st Headley Scout Group joined the village’s Remembrance service at All Saints on Sunday.
And there was a nice touch in Frensham, as a pair of ceramic poppy wreaths commissioned by the parish council and produced by Whitehill artist Esther Barrett were laid at the memorial.
