Farnham Town moved four points clear at the top of the Isthmian League South Central Division with a 3-0 win away to the Metropolitan Police on Saturday.
Howling winds and driving rain from Storm Bert made little difference to Paul Johnson’s side, to the delight of their manager.
Johnson said: “It was a convincing win in tough conditions. They have a nice pitch at Imber Court so it wasn’t too bad to play on.”
Before a crowd of 108, Farnham took the lead in the ninth minute through Sam De St Croix.
Johnson said: “We were playing against the wind and there was some good build-up play. Great Evans made a 20-yard run into the box and squared it to Sam, who buried it in the bottom corner.”
Within 40 seconds of the start of the second half, Farnham doubled their lead through Shay Brennan.
Johnson added: “There was a build-up down the right, Harry Cooksley put in a cross and Shay had an unmarked header into the bottom corner.
“It was a quick start to the half and that goal killed the game. The conditions got worse and they were struggling to get out of their half, so it was perfect timing.”
Cooksley claimed another assist as Mark Waters made it 3-0 in the 58th minute.
Johnson said: “We boxed them in and forced a corner, which was cleared out to Harry. He performed a step over and then crossed to Mark for another unmarked header.”
The Farnham manager was happy with the result - and to get some respite from the weather.
He said: “It was a good afternoon. It could have been a banana skin but we managed it well. In and out with three points, and we move on. I’m still drying out!”
