Alton manager Kevin Adair was pleased with his side’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Corinthian-Casuals in the Combined Counties Premier Division South.

Jamie Hoppitt’s equaliser rescued a point after Diogo Da Silva had given the visitors the lead at Anstey Park Enclosure.

Alton had suffered three consecutive defeats before facing the Casuals, and Adair was happy with the character his side showed to come from behind and earn a point.

“We started the game really well and had ten minutes of good possession but then we have a counter-attack against us and they went 1-0 up,” said Adair.

“The difference this week was the attitude towards how we react – it stayed positive.

“The team stayed positive and we found it easier to dig ourselves out of it.

“They definitely did that and we plugged away.

“We're disappointed to come away with a point.

“In the last five minutes we were under the cosh a little bit with the weather swinging again.

“The wind blowed three different ways and it's about how you adapt and adjust to it.

“We've lost a couple of players to injury and had to make another couple of changes, but I'm pleased with the performance. It's something to build on.

“It's difficult to not drop your heads sometimes when things happen to us and we don't get the rub of the green.

“I can't fault the effort. It's a big improvement but it had to happen because people were playing for their shirts and their position in this group.”

The Brewers trailed 1-0 at half-time despite a positive performance, and Adair admitted he wanted to see more quality in the second half.

“I was happy with the efforts in the first half but I think the quality wasn’t there,” said Adair.

“That can come down to confidence because we're going in at half-time 1-0 down and we don't score many goals.

“You’ve got to believe you’re going to get back in the game and the players did have that belief.

“We’ve got an exciting front six players – when they get the ball we look dangerous.

“We just need someone that will poke the ball in the net.

“It's the hardest thing to teach and the hardest thing to find.

“If there's anyone out there they're expensive or they're playing somewhere, so we've got to manage with what we've got and we'll continue to do so.”

Hoppitt scored Alton’s equaliser with a brave diving header, and Adair was full of praise for the goalscorer.

“Jamie's played in six or seven positions for me since he's been here,” said Adair.

“He was the sort of player we needed when he came in.

“He's the sort of player that keeps us galvanised.

“He's been around the block and he'll do whatever it takes to try to win a game of football.

“Players can learn from him. Sometimes not everything comes off for him but he plays with his heart and if we can get everyone else doing that it will make such a difference.”
