Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith was delighted with his side’s performance after they picked up an emphatic 6-3 win against Ashford Town (Middlesex).

The Baggies raced into a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes on their way to a vital three points, and Smith was happy with his side’s fast start.

“I thought it was a good start from us – a very good start – and the finishing was something we haven't had this season,” said Smith.

“Maybe we got the rub of the green with people hitting shots that are flying in the top corner, but we haven't had that all season.

“It's gone the other way this season where we'd been in control of the game and then the other team do that.”

The Baggies led 5-1 at half-time, but Smith admitted he felt the second half would be harder for his side as they searched for their second win of the season in the Isthmian League South Central Division.

“To go in 5-1 up at half-time – we've been in the opposite position ourselves and everything favours the team losing,” said Smith.

“We went to Kingstonian and were 5-1 down and it makes it easier for you if you're losing because there's nothing to lose.

“Being in the position we are, at 5-1 up I'm still not confident we're going to win the game because it was nerve-wracking for the lads – there was pressure to get three points.

“Ashford put a lot of pressure on – they were very vocal and upped their game.

“We didn't see the game out particularly well – I felt we could have done better but the important thing was to get the three points.

“You want everyone to carry on doing what they're doing but you know the other team are going to up their game.

“What we did well is when they scored we then scored to go 6-2 up.

“I don't think the lads relaxed – they put pressure on us, which was what they had to do.

“They wanted to get a goal in the first 15 minutes, but we didn’t want to concede in the first 15.

“We're conceding when we come out for the second half quite often, which isn't a good trait.

“When you're winning the last thing you want to do is concede early, because that gives the opposition a lift.

“If we defend like that we're going to lose games, so we need to address that.

“To win that game we're having to score more than three goals, which isn't a good thing.”
