Farnham Town Flares delivered a solid performance across four games at Hampshire FA’s over-60s walking football six-a-side competition in Basingstoke.
The Flares finished runners-up on the day, despite having a small squad of just six players.
The Flares started the tournament in style with a 2-0 win against Winchester Greens.
Back from a long lay-off, Ian Bale scored a superb goal, while Steve Probert netted his first for the club. Both goals were set up by playmaker John Woodcock.
Farnham fell to a 3-0 defeat against Cove in their second match, but bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Portsmouth.
A slick team move resulted in George Zadrozny finding the back of the net, assisted by Woodcock.
The Portsmouth match was the Flares’ best of the day, with Malcolm Ward shining in goal to keep a clean sheet.
In their final game, against Winchester, Farnham secured another 1-0 win. Woodcock got his name on the scoresheet, capitalising on a defensive error to slot the ball home.
Keith Huet’s passing and battling skills were key to the team's success.
Manager Chris Allen said: “I’m incredibly proud of the lads. With only six players, they gave everything in each game.
“Ian's return was fantastic to see, and everyone played their part. It was a real team effort, and finishing runners-up is a great achievement.”
The next round of games will take place at Hampshire FA's Winklebury complex on Wednesday, October 16.
Farnham Town Flares have over-50s, over-60s and multiage teams competing in leagues and cup competitions. The club also participates in tournaments and friendly games.
Although walking football is aimed at people over the age of 50, Farnham Town Flares also welcomes players below this age who would like to continue playing. Training is held weekly throughout the year.
