It was going to take something special to beat Farnham Town at home in the league - but the honour finally went to Hanworth Villa.
After Farnham assembled a championship-winning side in the summer of 2023, they went through 19 Combined Counties games undefeated at The Memorial Ground, and had added eight Isthmian League matches to that tally.
But last Saturday Hanworth stood firm at the back and conjured up one magic moment to clinch the victory.
In a tight first half, before a crowd of 629, Farnham’s Great Evans had a shot saved by Mark Smith and Sam De St Croix volleyed over.
Fourth-placed Hanworth threatened down the right and a low cross skidded through Farnham’s six-yard box with nobody there to stab it into the net.
Farnham’s Shay Brennan then had a low shot saved and Harry Cooksley fired a free kick just wide.
After the break a lovely one-two down the left saw Evans backheel the ball into the path of Brennan and carry on his run to receive the return pass and strike a first-time shot which Smith turned away for a corner at the near post.
Cooksley had a shot from the edge of the box saved by Smith before Hanworth’s George Wells stunned the home crowd in the 57th minute.
There was nothing on so Wells swung his left boot from 30 yards and the ball beat Hugo Sobte’s despairing dive before burying itself in the top left corner of the net.
As Farnham chased an equaliser, Benjamin Purcell shot wide from 30 yards and Brennan headed Max Meaton’s cross over the bar.
Cooksley put in two crosses which saw Hanworth scramble away a header and a shot, substitute Darryl Sanders had a shot deflected over and a Ryan Kinnane volley ended up in Smith’s arms.
Three minutes into stoppage time Smith punched a Cooksley free kick away from the top right corner, and a minute later Owen Dean met Cooksley’s free kick from the left with a header which was brilliantly saved by Smith. Sanders could not turn in the rebound, the final whistle blew and Hanworth Villa had done it.
