A bank has announced the solution to the forthcoming closure of its Farnham branch: a specialised cash machine in a convenience store.
Barclays customers will soon face a trek to Guildford or Camberley to talk to a cashier as The Borough branch will close a year later than planned on February 21.
But customers who don’t fancy a 12-mile trek have a closer option – a “deposit solution” in Farnham Stores on Hale Road.
Or in other words, a cash machine that also accepts deposits.
A spokesperson for Barclays said: “Following a review by LINK, a need for a deposit solution was identified in the local community and the branch closure date was extended.
“The deposit solution has now been installed and we can therefore confirm the branch will close on 21 February, 2025.”
The spokesperson added: “As visits to branches continue to fall, with the majority of people preferring to bank online, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.”
The impending closure leaves just Santander and Nationwide as the only remaining banks in Farnham, with the latter staying open in town until at least 2028.
A spokesperson said: “Nationwide is pleased to reassure local people, that we have a branch in the town offering access to cash and a range of banking services.
“We have a commitment to branches and that’s why we extended our branch promise that means everywhere we have a branch today, it will remain until at least the start of 2028.”
But Santander sound less hopeful and say they will “continue to look at all options”.
A spokesperson said: “We continuously review our operating model to ensure we are organised in the best way to support our customers.
“Whenever changes are made to the network, we always ensure that customers are made aware first.”
