Yes, the traffic has been a nightmare.

But dawn always follows the darkness and the message is clear from traders affected by town centre roadworks: we’re here, open for business, and we need your custom.

Farnham town centre needs your support with traders making an impassioned plea for shoppers not to avoid the town during one of the biggest upheavals in recent history.

Concerns have been raised that queues on the likes of Downing Street and West Street at peak times are deterring shoppers, with a perceived increase in empty spaces at central car park backing up those claims.

But good things come to those who wait, and those who visit outside peak hours will be welcomed with open arms by the likes of Steve Hamilton and his Downing Street counterparts.

“We need to let people know that Farnham is open for business,” said the Hamilton’s Tea House owner.

“Farnham is open, the shops are all buzzing and all the retailers are here, desperate to look after you and make sure you have a great experience.”

Gregory Stafford MP echoed Steve’s comments during a meeting with Mr Hamilton and Borelli’s Wine Bar owner David Quick on Downing Street last Friday.

He said: “Yes, there is a problem with traffic but it’s not 24 hours a day and don’t be put off from coming here.”

Mr Hamilton’s words coincide with a greater effort to boost town centre trade with mobile signs being placed at entrances to the town saying ‘Visit Farnham – Support Shops’. Programmes of weekly events in the town are also being posted on social media sites to counteract some of the negativity surrounding the ongoing work.

“The traffic isn’t as bad as it looks,” added Mr Hamilton.

“Farnham is still a great place to be and we’re still open for business.”
