A dream has come true for a school near Farnham as their production of a Shakespeare classic has picked up a national award.

Edgeborough students should take a bow as their year 7 and 8 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was named Best Play at the National School Theatre Awards.

The school’s interpretation of the bard’s classic received rave reviews with drama teacher Catherine Self being singled out for praise.

The cast and director were lauded for their “clear understanding, humour and enthusiasm” with some calling the production “incredible”.

Catherine wanted to “give pupils the opportunity to perform Shakespearean language with a story that was accessible for their age group”. It seems the overall consensus is that she went above and beyond in achieving her goal.

When Self and members of the cast attended the ceremony at the London Shaw Theatre late last month, the director played down the school’s chances of success given the high-quality competition, so was thrilled to get the nod.

She said: “I didn’t anticipate our name being called and had prepared the pupils that I didn’t expect us to win.”

Actress and NSTA Patron Zoe Boyle praised the Edgeborough production for its “profound storytelling and stellar performances” in presenting the award.

She added: “The production seamlessly blended powerful dialogue and compelling scenes leaving a lasting impact on everyone who watched; making this play an unforgettable experience”.

“I am delighted for Catherine and all the pupils and staff involved with A midsummer Night’s Dream,” said headteacher Daniel Cox.
