Pavement parkers have found themselves a new spot in Farnham town centre following a revamp of a busy street.
East street has been shrunk to a single one-way lane with the pavement being extended to make the area north of Brightwells more pedestrian-friendly.
There’s also new traffic lights and a speedbump to make the area safer for the expected influx that Brightwells Yard will bring with its long-awaited opening imminent.
But the changes have split opinions, especially as vehicles, rather than cars are making use of the wider pavements.
Indeed, one of the big winners as has been Domino’s Pizza as there’s been an increase in trade now it’s easy to park right outside the front door.
“The wider pavements mean it’s a nicer experience and I don’t think the traffic has been affected too much,” said one shopper the Herald spoke to last Friday.
Other residents spoke of their confusion as to whether they were parking spaces or not and whether people may park there because of the high prices of parking in the town. Some have called for bollards have been installed to stop the divisive practice, but not Domino’s.
“The changes have made deliveries easier and it means less traffic at night,” said a Domino’s worker.
The crossing in East Street joins to the Woolmead building site tipped to become a campus for the UCA, with debate continuing on how the barren patch can be redeveloped.
Feedback has been predictably varied online with Farnham Town Council receiving some criticism, despite being opposed to certain parts of the new-look road.

The Town Council request those who feel strongly about ongoing developments to get involved in planning applications that are live now instead of reacting negatively when they start being built.
