Anyone who went to bed early last night missed a treat as the Northern Lights lit up the night sky in a rare and spectacular show.

An “extreme” geomagnetic storm meant the phenomena was visible well beyond its Arctic hinterland with hues of purple, blue and green daubing the sky around midnight and the early hours.
